New Bombay

There’s this Indian restaurant I pass by everyday going to work in Vancouver. I remember not breathing when I walk in front of it because of the pungent smell coming from their kitchen. And I can just imagine how their stock room looks like. I’d be dead (with my allergic rhinitis) if I come any closer to the door. But I don’t know what happened, maybe it’s the daily dose of Indian spices that I started noticing I soon didn’t mind the smell anymore. I did try some Indian restaurants eventually and found it ok. Still won’t go out like how you smelled going in though.

So that’s what I think of when I see this restaurant in Podium Mall. But whenever I pass it, I don’t get any strong odors, but they had the decors going for them. All those deep red, brown, and yellow shades just force you to think of Indian food. At my table and reviewing the menu, I ordered the Chicken Shahjani which is boneless chicken sautéed in masala, cooked with onion-tomato gravy, and finally topped with omelette.

The masala mixed with the gravy gave it with a lighter flavor, unlike the usual Indian food that’s like a bomb of spices in your mouth. The omelette topping was so sad looking, that I want to give it back to the chef and just ask them to leave it out of the dish. The overall flavor was a little salty for my taste (and that’s a lot coming from me since we hail from a salt-loving bunch). It becomes bearable when paired with naan. The servers also appear very sleepy and don’t smile a lot, they’re all in a pout! The location is nice, on 5F of the mall, near that gourmet hotdog stand.

Verdict: 1/5
I’m not a fan of the food, or just the one I ordered. Maybe there are other dishes worth going back for, but not anytime soon, at least for me. Oh and to totally forget about this meal, I bought some (chocolate and calamansi) ice cream to numb my pain. From a different store, of course. And I think this was the saving grace for my meal :)

Mynt

i've eaten lunch buffet at this restaurant thrice and this is one of my favorite indian buffet restaurants because of its wide variety of tasty options in their buffet table. however, this time around, i got invited to my friend's tenth year wedding anniversary for dinner a la carte style. we got the appetizer "asparagus paneer bhurji flat bread - masala scrambled cottage cheese, peppers and asparagus on a naan bread with garlic tulsi aioli on a cedar plank". i loved it because it's like pizza. it was my first time to try paneer on pizza and it was a nice suprise. we ordered three entrees: curry with eggplant, another curry with masala sauce, and chicken biryani. i didn't like the curry with eggplant but liked the masala curry and chicken biryani. we had "narangi pista kulfi - rich, creamy orange and pistachio flavored ice-cream served in an orange rind" for dessert and i liked its taste and presentation. i'd give this restaurant's service and ambiance a high recommendation.

Steps of India

as send-off party to my teammate, we had indian lunch buffet at this restaurant. i've been to a lot of indian lunch buffets and this place wasn't remarkable. the buffet table had very few options, around two chicken dishes, four vegetarian dishes and three dessert options. the buffet table wasn't arranged with easy access. two people on the buffet table can get crowded. the food tasted just fine and not significant. one of my teammates noticed the servers were all mexicans and we didn't see any indian coming out from the kitchen. she didn't like the taste of the grilled tandoori chicken.

Coriander

Once located at the crossroads near IT park, this fusion restaurant was one of the best places where you can get unique and fresh singaporean/indian dishes at an affordable price.

This restaurant practically makes use of the herb coriander in almost all of their dishes from the appetizers, garnish, and even up to their drinks. This makes all their dishes light and refreshing to the palate.

We had basil pesto pasta, samosas, and naan for the duration of our visit here. The grilled stuffed eggplant was also quite delicious. The toasted naan was served with salsa that fit the theme perfectly with its crisp and hint of spice. Even though they have meat dishes here, vegetarians have the option to order a meatless version of some specific food.

The ambiance was perfect, as the lighting was just right to set the mood for a perfect dinner with the company of your closest friends.

To end the meal, we also ordered a scoopful of homemade green tea geleto, just the right way to end the night.

Penang

this is one of my favorite malaysian restaurant nearby. i've been here a couple of times with a number of friends. it does not only offer malaysian food but thai, chinese and indian dishes as well.

my top choice among the appetizers is the roti canai. i can't get enough of the flat bread dipped into the chicken and potato curry sauce. the pandan chicken is just average for me. the satay chicken is good but too filling as an appetizer. the fried calamari is good but forgettable compared to the calamari in other restaurants like maggiano's, cheesecake factory or philly g's.

the pad thai tastes good too compared to the one in i am siam. we order thai style tofu everytime we go here. it is served on sizzling plate with an egg topping. it is very good. i also like mango chicken. it does not only taste good but is served with good presentation. for fried rice, we usually order nasi goreng. it is fried rice with shrimp paste.

Verdict: 5/5
