Captain's Boil

The test of a good restaurant is if it is consistent in pushing out good dishes and if it improves in the stuff they need to work on based on customer reviews or well just based on their experience. I've been to Captain's Boil five times in the past 8 months (yes that's why I can't fit in my jeans anymore haha) three times at their Kingsway branch, once at their Richmond location, and once at their Yonge branch during my Toronto visit last month. I've ordered different items from their menu on each occasion and I think the only ones I haven't tried yet are the clams (because I'm afraid they'll be chewy) and the chicken slices (because hey why go to a seafood boil if you're going to get chicken!! haha).

This review is a summary of all those dishes I tried.

Sauces:

Captain's Boil - probably the best choice to have a balanced taste of spicy buttery and garlic goodness
Cajun - hotter than the Captain's Boil
Lemon Pepper - a bit bland for my taste, might be good for those who don't want to overpower the seafood taste or those afraid of chili
Garlic Sauce - I tried this on the shrimp but I missed the spice, this should be the choice for the faint of heart.

If you like eating with your hands wrapped in plastic gloves and devouring seafood swimming in sauce served inside plastic bags then this is definitely the place for you. The first time I tried this kind of dining was in California at Kickin' Crab and Craw Daddy and Boiling Crab, what can I say, I'm not a fan of getting food inside plastic bag but it works if you don't mind getting messy, which is probably what's gonna happen anyway when you're eating seafood and cracking shells here and there.. is it worth another visit? Sure! Especially if you don't want to have that mess in the comforts of your dining room, otherwise I say just go buy fresh seafood from the market then cook them at home.

Verdict: 3.5/5

The Holy Crab

Louisiana inspired seafood boil

I've been waiting for the opening of this restaurant since winter last year, mostly because I wanted to try the lobster roll! We visited this place a couple of times and as much as I like their lobster rolls, there's a few other dishes that's worth trying, like the fried frog legs! which, not surprisingly, DOES NOT taste like chicken at all.

Just like Captain's Boil, this seafood restaurant servers their food inside plastic bags, and you will have to use those plastic gloves unless you want to dirty your hands.. am still not a fan of that but hey that's their style.

Ordering here means picking a seafood - lobster, crawfish crab, crab legs, shrimp, clams, mussels, then choosing the sauce: cajun or garlic pepper, and finally choosing the spiciness level - mild, medium, spicy or holy moly, guess what I picked! There's a variety of sides and snacks and I usually pick the calamari and the soft shell crab if I'm not feeling too adventurous.

Although I enjoyed the fare here, and the fact that they don't split the lobster in half, which makes it more instagrammable, I find that the sauce is somewhat lacking. I would definitely prefer the seafood to be swimming in sauce rather than just coated at the top.

However, despite its misses, the staff at their Robson branch is far more attentive that the ones at Captain's boil. I would probably come back just to try the crab roll next time and a few other sides.

Bigby's

Just like Pino, Bigby's is in its third revival in Ayala Center Cebu. The first one was located in Ayala's active zone, the second being near Persian Palate, and finally in its current location below Dakasi.

I am quite pleased with this new and improved version of Bigby's. Their menu is expanded to include several new items such as a whole rack of ribs, steak, fried chicken served in threes, sandwiches, and a plethora of interesting desserts.

I ordered for myself their platter called "Belly Buster" that's comprised of onion rings, two slabs of pork chops with gravy, and a quarter serve of ribs. The pork chops were absolutely tender and the ribs were cooked just right. The onion rings were delicious and crispy, which I think are the best rings in town. The gravy that came with the chops were delicious, light and slightly buttery which makes it even more addicting. The sauce for the ribs tasted like steak and Worcestershire sauce that compliments it very much. The ample serving of rice under the stack of deliciously cooked meat tasted good as well, truth be told.

I'm looking forward to my next visit here so I could sample the rest of their dishes.

Delicious, cheap, affordable. Can't wait to see what else they offer.

ZubuDagat

It was one hectic morning, with so many things to do and traffic running heavily in the background, when we decided to stop by Marina mall to visit a specific branch of Zubuchon near the airport. This particular branch, unlike its brothers and sisters, serve seafood freshly caught from the ports and delivered on the day it was taken.

Of course, what is a Zubuchon branch without its trademark Zubulechon? Yup, the crackling roast pig is still part of its ever expanding range of dishes MarketMan has in store for his customers even for this joint.

We visited this place a little close to twelve o'clock and were surprised that there was a "fish bar" north of the main door. That said, the management mentioned that it's there to showcase the fresh catch of the day. Curious, we were seated and decided to buy our usual order of seaweed platter and a kilo of boneless roast pig belly. To add to that, we also had ourselves a seafood platter and a serving of salmon sashimi.

The seafood platter arrived in a timely manner and there was scallops, tanigue, shrimp. squid and fried fish skin. The squid and the shrimp seemed to be overcooked, and so are the scallops, but the fish and the fish skin was just right.

For once, the seaweed platter that we ordered had the complete set (guso, lukot, lato) as compared to other branches of this restaurant.

The sashimi plate seemed a bit disappointing because of the ginger that was placed under the fish, which ruined the taste of the salmon. In Japanese restaurants, they add pickled ginger sparingly to the dish as a means to cleanse your palate. The ginger placed seemed to overdo it altogether.

The food is satisfactory, save for the overcooked seafood and the sashimi plate. It's too far from Cebu city though, for us to go back to this place.

McKeown's Restaurant & Bar

i found this place after looking up on yelp for recommended seafood places. i read that crab stuffed salmon is a must-try. i mistakenly went into the bar section where it was dark and people were drinking and  playing on a billiard pool. i was thinking to myself if i'm on the right place. i debated if should stay considering the unusual dining ambiance. i decided to leave and while walking i'm glad i found the door to the actual restaurant. it's a romantic place for fine-dining. they served me french bread with butter. the bread was not fresh and tasty. i ordered the crab stuffed salmon, "wild salmon stuffed with dungeness crab, cream cheese, spinach, artichoke hearts, parmesan and garlic then baked and served with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal fresh vegetables". it was so delicious! the salmon and crab were fresh and high-quality! i wanted to make it at home after having it. the vegetables were cooked just right too, not over-cooked. the vegetables and mashed potato worked perfectly with the crab stuffed salmon. the entire dish leaves you a satisfied yet light tummy leaving me room for dessert.

on my way to the beach to catch the sunset, i passed by a donut shop which has this stick of 6 mini-donuts. i asked if i could get a stick of 2 flavors but the server said i couldn't. i ended up with chocolate glazed chocolate donut. it wasn't a remarkable one and it was so sweet.

Verdict: 4/5 (-1 for the bread, it should be served hot and fresh.)

Dooger's Seafood & Grill

one good way to find the best restaurants in a place is to ask the locals their favorite and recommended places. the hotel receptionist recommended this for good seafood options. this place is located at the center of seaside downtown. the sun has set and lights were coming from the shops and restaurants, it was very nice and quaint picture.

the restaurant was busy when i came but it is big and has lots of tables. i waited for only five minutes.

candle light was on the table with a fresh rose. their menu had a lot of items from pasta, seafood to steaks. i chose surf & turf with lobster and rib-eye steak. it comes with shrimp garden salad, toasted bread and baked potato with sour cream and butter.

it's a fine-dining place which is a good place to celebrate an occasion or to impress someone.

the salad came and it was too big for one person! it's good for two persons. i guess the salad compensates for the wait on the entree.

the lobster was perfectly cooked, it was not gummy nor over-cooked. the lobster meat was conveniently pulled-out already from the shell but was sitting on top of the shell for nice presentation. the steak was a little bland for me though. the baked potato with sour cream and butter was a perfect side. i didn't bother tasting the toasted bread.

Verdict: 4/5 (-1 for the bland steak)

Azabu

Located within walking distance from our house, Azabu is a fairly recent contender in the Japanese restaurant business here in Cebu. At first I thought it was one of those overpriced places that tried hard to be called a Japanese restaurant, but upon our visit, I was once again proven wrong.

I guess you can't call a restaurant bad and pretentious from just the looks.

It was a small place that can hold at least two dozen pairs of people in its fold. Fairly decent, if I may say so myself. The ambiance reeked of class and fine dining, and it was a good thing I was dressed for the occasion. I mean, look at the menu.

What I liked most about this place is that this is the first place I've been to that sells ikura, or salmon roe. And also one of the few places that sell Uni, or Sea Urchin.

Those two are probably my favorites when we talk about sashimi. Yum!

Moving on, my mom had for herself a sushi-sashimi bento that had an array of fresh fish in it. My sister had a bowl of mixed sashimi while I had myself a bento plate of beef teriyaki.

To add to our already plentiful dishes, we had this Sashimi platter served in a wooden boat. There was octopi slices, squid with ikura, fresh uni served in a seaweed cup, salmon, and other white fishes.

They didn't have Japanese Tuna at that time so they changed that for Ikura.

To down the meal, there was free flowing house tea. I had the liberty to sample their sake though, since my companions didn't want to drink at all. It tasted nice while it was served hot, definitely steamy and alcoholic. The heat brings out the alcohol content in the sake, it seems. But I think I prefer cold sake.

Dessert time came soon, and we ordered a plate of Japanese cake and a cup of Macha Ice Cream. The staff were kind enough to give us a chilled sample of refreshing coffee jelly.

 It was very delicious!

And did I mention that they were also very generous when it comes to grapes? Almost all of our dishes came with several globes of seedless grapes!

Lahug

Verdict:

A: 5/5

I liked this place a lot. It was a very enjoyable experience. I could say it is a complete opposite of Banri, whose ambiance felt homey and familiar whereas Azabu is somewhat formal and classy. This restaurant is probably in my top Japanese restaurants here in Cebu.

Nick's Lighthouse

we had this crazy idea of walking from embarcadero to golden gate bridge one saturday. we were supposed to eat at cioppino's but we were already famished from walking. when we reached fisherman's wharf, we started looking for interesting restaurants that offer cioppino. the first thing from this restaurant that caught my attention was the number of people eating steamed crabs while standing outside the restaurant just like street food. the waiter suggested we get the imperial platter which has lobster, crab, prawns, clams, oysters, calamari and shrimp. he said it would be perfect for a group of four like us. we thought that it might be too much for us. we ordered lobster thermidor, cioppino, linguine vongole with clams, cannelloni filled with crab and shrimp, poke sandwich with fries. all entrees come with a choice of clam chowder,  or lobster bisque or salad with shrimp and sourdough bread. the clam chowder was delicious!

we all loved the cioppino. it was my first time to eat it from a restaurant though so i have no comparison for it. my order of cannelloni with asparagus was perfect! the taste of the cream sauce, cheese, crab and shrimp was awesome! my two friends were not that happy with their orders of linguine and sandwich. the lobster was a little gummy too.

Pho Cong Ly

my friend was craving for some pho and found this place on yelp. the 25% off on weekdays from 3 to 6pm all the more encouraged us to try this place. we had spring rolls as starter. my friends loved the spring rolls. for our entrees, they each got pho of different kind and both of them liked their phos. i ordered the fried soft shell crab and oyster and i really enjoyed it. it's not the best soft shell crab i've tried though. the one in joy yee evanston illinois was tastier. we also ordered an extra steak meal. the steak was just fine but it was tasty and well-cooked. we unanimously had a great dining experience at this restaurant and it comes with free private parking.

Seafood island

Among the number of restaurants in the newly renovated Ayala mall as of yet, Seafood island has got to be one of the better places to grab a meal with your friends looking to experience their first hand experience in native filipino dining.

This place specializes in group meals, or what they call boodle, or a group meal where a large heap of rice and a variety of viands is served for everyone to share.

Since the place is fairly new and that we arrived here at lunch hour, the place is packed. We could barely hear ourselves in the wave of chatter and the tinker of tableware, let alone fine a decent space to eat.  Regardless, we were fortunate enough to get one by the windowside with ample space on our table.

For starters, we had

chicharon bulaklak,

Kinilaw na tanigue

...and binagoongang baboy.

After which, we had a hearty serving of sisig and crispy pata.

The waiting time is terrible, even the time you have to wait for the change and receipt is awful. Everyone seems to pile up near the counter and whenever someone come to listen to our request, people seem disinterested and hurry back to finish what they were doing. The sisig and the crispy pata arrived late while the other three dishes arrived early. I was also disappointed by the taste of the iced teas. We couldnt hear our conversation by the sheer noise in the background. The concept seems like a good idea, but dining out with your family, this is not the place to go.

There are better tasting chispy patas out there. Expect less for the amount you'd pay for. Plus the ambiance is slightly below average.

Crawdaddy

we ordered their fried oysters for appetizers considering that we went there for dinner. it was good. the sauce complemented with the fried oysters. given the restaurant's name, we stayed away from ordering steamed crabs or shrimps. we ordered one pound of steamed crawfish in cajun garlic sauce. the waiter asked us how hot we wanted it: mild, hot, or fire. we made a mistake in picking hot since it was burning our tongues. i only managed to eat around 4 pieces of crawfish since it was too much and getting the meat from the crawfish is such a challenge. this is probably we noticed many customers there were having shrimps. they're easier to descale. as for the cajun sauce, it was good but i like the take from boiling crab better. in addition to the crawfish, we requested corn and sausage. i wanted more of the sausage. it was probably just around two inches long! the portion was so little.

This is my first encounter with the crawfish, are they really this small? Had I known that they were going to be tiny, I would have opted for shrimps or prawns instead, less hassle and more meat. Anyways, it was an experience trying to wrestle with this crustacean. Good thing there were fried oysters to keep my hunger at bay, I would definitely order them again if I make the same mistake of revisiting this restaurant. One good thing they have going for them though is the sauce, which was truly HOT in every sense of the word, I was crying buckets when I took a spoonful to taste it, I haven't been overwhelmed by hot sauce before this.
